Approaching With the Dash Attack

![]() Diddy’s primary approach methods rely on bananas, these methods are already outlined in the articles “Banana Placement” and “Grouping Bananas”. Once the opponent has been frustrated or hit with bananas, Diddy has several approach options that can then come into play. Diddy Kong’s dash attack is one of the best in the game. It has multiple hits, covers just the right amount of distance, and has virtuously no lag afterwards. After performing the dash attack, opponents are knocked upwards slightly, usually in the perfect position to be hit with another air attack, or to hit them again with another dash attack from the other direction. The dash attack can be shield grabbed, but it is very difficult if you just finished harassing the opponent with bananas (and especially if there are some lying directly in front of them). Keep in mind an inexperienced opponent will likely fail at shield grabbing the dash attack every time, but an experienced opponent may succeed more often than not. The dash attack has enough range that it can shoot through the opponents shield (but not to far), if this is the case, then when you come out the other side you will not only have avoided being shield grabbed, but can also hit them with a Smash attack. You can also stutter step with the dash attack. For more information on this, view the article “Two Types of Stutter Stepping”. The last tidbit on the dash attack is that, like any character, it can be used to pick up items. For Diddy this is especially useful. This property, combined with the short lag after the dash attack, means that you can dash attack pick up a banana and throw it just after the dash attack ends. After a dash attack, Diddy will usually have the opportunity to get a free hit on the opponent. The dash attack will commonly send the other player at one of three angles. The first is just above Diddy. At this angle, a U-Air, B-Air, or D-Air would probably be the best choices. The D-Air can be especially strong because it will send the opponent back to the ground where Diddy is best equipped to punish. The second position is usually just in front of Diddy. From here the F-Air will likely be your best choice and will commonly be a KO opportunity if the opponent is over 150%. The last position is just behind Diddy, where the best option is usually to attempt hitting them with a double B-Air. |
