Gears of War Online Tournament!MLG and GameStop are proud to announce that registration for the next Gears of War tournament is now open! The first set of tournaments were a smashing success, with over 240 teams in total, and there is little doubt that this one will feature equally fierce competition. We expect this tournament to fill up very quickly (the last one filled up in one day), so check out the registration info and rules below and get your team together! Registration closes on Feb 1 or as soon as the tournament fills up, and the first round will begin on Feb 6. The matches will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week. The tournament will run for five weeks, as teams of four will compete for cold hard cash and bragging rights on the ultimate competitive gaming arena—Major League Gaming. Gears of War is one of the most critically acclaimed and best selling games in recent memory. It sold more than one million copies in its first two weeks--more than any other 360 title to date. The game is also responsible for a surge in Xbox Live usage, resulting in an 80% increase in traffic since its release. After such a phenomenal release and the success of the Gears of War Celebrity Exhibition Tournament sponsored by GameStop at the MLG National Championships, the decision was made to offer the online tournament experience to Gears of War fans all over the world. "Gears of War has a huge community of active players and has a good chance of making the 2007 Pro Circuit," MLG’s League Commissioner John Nelson stated, explaining why Gears of War was chosen as the first online tournament game MLG has offered outside of Halo 2. He also noted the merits of the game’s teamwork and competitive aspects, saying, "Just like Halo 2, Gears of War has power weapons that dictate the flow of each match. With the transition from Halo: CE to Halo 2 we saw an increase in the concept of teamwork. Gears of War takes that concept one step farther." Serious competitive-gaming fans will note that MLG has taken steps to assure the settings are fair and balanced for tournament play. The maps for the tournament were carefully screened by the League Commissioner’s office to test for balance in player and weapon spawns and to encourage active, teamwork-based combat. John Nelson also explained why the gametype Execution was selected for the tournament. "We chose Execution because it makes teamwork necessary not only to get power weapons, but to eliminate enemies as well." Registration is now open for the tournament, meaning players should assemble their teams, register for the event and begin practicing for the tournament as soon as possible. The registration is capped at 80 teams, and is expected to fill up incredibly quickly. You can access all the rules and tournament information from MLGPro.com’s online tournament section.
