Q&A with Oldbie

Pure took second place in the inaugural Shadowrun event on the Boost Mobile MLG Pro Circuit. One of their members, Oldbie, took a few minutes to answer some questions for MLG on the Orlando floor:

All right, I’m here with Oldbie of MDG Pure. You guys had your first MLG experience in Chicago, how did that go for you?

It went pretty well. We ended up getting second place; I was really excited about it. We went into the event kind of unsure of ourselves. We had a team change right before the event, picking up Chillax. Before that, I was the human on the team and ended up playing elf in Chicago. I hadn’t even gotten my 100 Elf Games achievement and I only started playing elf three days before the event. It actually worked out well and we ended up placing second.

Well, after the tournament, you guys seemed really excited about some game play and style changes you were going to be working on. How has your team’s strategy developed since Chicago?

This last tournament, we were kind of new together. We had all played together in random scrims, but we had been on different teams. This time we tried to stick with our same races. A lot of teams switch things up, but we’ve kept our same races and lineups from Chicago. We’re actually trying to evaluate a lot of things that we did wrong, like rushing. We’re the worst rushing team out there and have a really defensive play style. What we’re basically trying to do is develop our offensive rushes and different money distributions. We came up with a lot of new ideas for how to pass out money each round, so we’re feeling a lot more confident.

Let’s hear about some of those money strategies.

Absolutely. First round, we have a pretty generic strategy. We run two elves, a human and a troll, which is the standard build. The only exception is Pinnacle, where our elves get teleport. Generally though, our human buys enhanced, our elves get resurrect and the troll buys tree. Chillax (human) generally gives 500 to Avenged (troll) for him to get a rifle. He’s the best rifler on our team and one of the best riflers in the game. After that, things get more interesting. Second round, we have Redeemer hand out to everybody to get teleport and third round we hand every single dollar out to Redeemer so that he can get his full build.

Now what about the way you approach some of the gametypes. I thought one of the most interesting games of Chicago was the one between you and StK on Power Station. It seemed nobody had really played that game type in that style.
