Curiously, the Shadowrun rankings now show Shoot to Kill at first (7600 points), Secret Weapon second (7400), Pure at third (7200) and Three Shot Killers in fourth (6625). Had StK not won its fifth-place consolation match, Secret Weapon would have claimed the top spot.

In addition to the changes in ranks, Shadowrun saw an evolution of the metagame. The two most notable changes were the use of gliders for trolls and the rampant presence of anti-magic generators. The philosophy behind the glider troll is clear. Regardless of whether they are floating or on the ground, trolls are an easy target to hit. While a floating human, elf, or dwarf may be cannon fodder, the troll is going to get hit regardless. However, with strangle, AMGs, and katanas standing as some of the top ways to down a troll, the glider’s utility comes into picture. Floating above the ground keeps the player safely out of the greatest harm’s way.

Likely, the glider troll developed as a necessary response to the common use of AMGs (which are purchased as early as the first round in the current metagame). In high-level play, anti-magic generators now litter the arena. It appears the competitive field has discovered the true utility of AMGs. In addition to taking away a troll’s defenses, AMGs shape the landscape of the battle field, tear down setups and serve as a defense against backside teleporting flanks.
