| Who would have thought the potential final Halo 2 meeting between Final Boss and Carbon - if things shake out that way at the National Championships - would happen in the Losers Bracket Semifinals? Both teams suffered losses earlier than usual and had to trudge through the Losers Bracket just for a shot at Top 3. For these two juggernauts who have won the title of every Pro Circuit event in 2006 and 2007, finishing outside of the final three is a major development. Carbon barely escaped upset to 10th-seeded XiT Woundz the round prior and looked a bit shaky heading into the meeting with Final Boss, who were tested by third-ranked FBI The Agency in the previous round. Both teams looked on top of their craft during Game 1. Offensively, at least. Warlock CTF took a blazing pace, with Final Boss scoring in the first 30 seconds. Carbon countered just a minute later. Final Boss then snagged two captures with two minutes to lead 3-1. Carbon did not relent, however, and score twice themselves within 30 seconds. After 4:30 of play, the score was 3-3. Over the next two minutes, the teams traded captures, setting up a dramatic finish. Final Boss made several pushes to the Carbon base, which were repelled by the second-seeded team. Eventually, however, Final Boss' pressure was too great and they took the game 5-4. Strongside had 21 kills to just 9 deaths, while Ogre 2 added a 20-13 performance. Game 2 moved the action to Lockout for Team Slayer. Final Boss opened quickly, snagging a 9-2 lead thanks to their BR Tower spawn and control of the sniper rifle. Carbon chipped away at the lead for the next several minutes, closing to 23-22, when they scored the game's second sniper rifle. Despite some head-shots from Karma, Final Boss actually extended their lead during Carbon's sniper control to 32-28. Seemingly frustrated, Carbon rushed to break a stagnant setup, but simply gave Final Boss five kills to push their lead to 37-28. Despite some misdirection from Carbon's coach, xXx, through verbal false information, Carbon could not assume any sort of control of the map. Final Boss made sure to go one-for-one and won the game 50-38. Ogre 2 and Strongside led the way again, with 15-11 and 14-9 games, respectively. |
