LGD (Red) Win Gears Kickoff Tourneys A and B
By Jason | Published: February 23, 2007 10:16pm EST
Major League Gaming’s Gears of War fans now have their very own champions, as the A and B Kickoff Tournaments ended this week. Team LGD (Red) managed to battle through more than 200 teams of competitors across both tournaments to take first place two nights in a row. With both championship titles under their belt, LGD (Red) have clearly established themselves as Gears’ top franchise.

Looking back at the B Tournament, LGD (Red) started off with a bang, finishing pool play with a perfect 12-0 record. This record was enough to earn them the fifth seed for the brackets, where they cruised past the competition. After winning their first three rounds by 3-0 scores, they only dropped a single game in the semi-finals against the talented ZeR0 GraVity. That 3-1 victory earned them their first championship attempt on Wednesday night, where they faced High Council +.

The B Tournament finals were hotly contested, with each team winning two maps to force a decisive fifth round on Fuel Depot. In that fifth round, the action was no less interesting or intense. LGD (Red) started out on fire, winning the first three rounds with relative ease and controlling Fuel Depot’s central warehouse structure to good effect. However, in the fourth round, a well-placed frag grenade from High Counil + broke LGD’s control of the warehouse and shifted the momentum in their favor. In a sudden role reversal, High Council + won the next three rounds to tie the score and leave the fate of the B Tournament championship in doubt. Fortunately for LGD (Red), their sniper got hot at the right time and behind a few clutch kills they swung the momentum back in their favor and won the last two rounds to take the $1000 first place prize.

The A Tournament appeared to be slightly more difficult for LGD (Red). They dropped a single game in pool play to the tough FeaR Clan, which forced them to enter the brackets with the 16th seed and a much tougher road. They proved to be up to the challenge, however, as they won their first two rounds with perfect scores, before routing the first-seeded perfect Alliance 3-1 and advancing to the quarter finals. They then defeated ninth-seeded Team vBi 3-1 before narrowly escaping defeat in the semi-finals against 12th-seeded MoB Hot N Mild. These victories set them up for a second championship match against High Council +.

The A Tournament finals were no less exciting than the B finals had been the night before. High Council + looked to be prepared to avenge their loss from the night before, as they came out in the first round on Clocktower and crushed LGD (Red) 5-0. The next round was not much better, as High Council + managed to win on Gridlock by a score of 5-3. Unfortunately for High Council +, LGD refused to go down in the third round. Instead, they answered back with their own 5-0 win on Mansion, finishing their opponents at a blistering pace and completing the entire map in less than 5 minutes. Their momentum continued on the fourth map, War Machine. LGD smoked High Council + for a second time, finishing quickly 5-0. So once again, the finals of the tournament came down to Fuel Depot, where LGD’s momentum was just too much for High Council + to handle. They won that map 5-2 and took home their second championship title of the week.

With the A Tournament victory, LGD (Red) became Gears of War’s undisputed champion and took home a $4000 first place prize for their efforts. Combined with their winnings from the night before, each of the four young men from LGD pockets $1250. Congratulations to LGD (Red) members FiberOptix, Devastator, Desecrate and Shakur. You had a fantastic tournament and clearly set yourselves above the rest of the competition with your incredible consistency, skill and teamwork on your way to two tournament titles. Enjoy the victory, but do not rest easily.  More Gears of War online tournaments are on their way from MLGPro.com and thousands of gamers will fight for your crown.
