Being Unpredictable

There’s nothing more gratifying than back smacking an unsuspecting enemy. The art of unpredictability requires mastery of your opponent in an ongoing mind game. Some players are renowned for their ability to anticipate enemy movements and, likewise, to trick them in return. While you must know your opponent to outwit him, here are a few things to think about when trying to make your game less predictable.

* Being unpredictable requires intimate knowledge of all the maps because you have to know multiple routes to get to similar locations.

* Mix it up. If you’ve gone at an opponent the same way three times in a row, fool them by taking a different route. Of course, as time goes on things get tricky. Doubling-back, going the same way one extra time and all sorts of mind-games can result in success.

Halo, especially at the top level of competition, is a chess match.
* Know your opponent. It’s hard to do, but try to enter the head of your enemies. Gain a feel for their game and you will know what they are going to do as they are doing it. If you can predict an enemy's movements, you can be predictably unpredictable, that is, you can position yourself in a place that they won’t predict you to be.

Watching videos of professionals can help in the unpredictability department. Top-tier players know the maps intimately and mix up their game often. From their movements around the map you can begin to practice your own techniques. Complex mental games, such as being unpredictable, are ultimately learned through constant practice and a conscious effort to master your opponents. Just remember, mix up your game!
