Rolling

![]() Rolling can be performed by holding the L or R-trigger and then pressing left or right on the control stick. During a roll, your character goes through essentially three phases. The first phase is the very brief start-up lag of the roll. Following this phase, your character becomes invincible as they change position. Finally, your character experiences a brief ending lag, during which you recover from the roll but are no longer invincible. Rolling can be used to move around an enemy or quickly retreat. If you are about to shield an F-Smash, instead of shielding it, simply roll through the opponent and punish him from behind as he performs his attack on an opponent who is no longer there. Aside from this move, with some characters, rolling can be used to quickly retreat and reset your character on the stage. Try coming in with a dash attack with a character such as Diddy Kong and then quickly rolling back; it works almost like a poke and is very difficult for the opponent to counter. Finally, rolling can be used similarly to dashing for making slightly more than minute position changes. Be careful not to roll too much; doing so makes it easy for the opponent to punish you as you exit the invincibility animation of a roll. That said, rolling can be used as a longer duration spot dodge by simply rolling into the edge of the stage, essentially make your character roll in place with a long invincibility window. Note #1: Default control scheme using the GCN controller is assumed. |
