Dodging

![]() Most players refer to dodging as either side-stepping or spot-dodging, the act which is performed by holding the L- or R-trigger and pressing down on the control stick. Dodging should be secondary to shielding because it offers more risk. The primary problem with dodging is that the opponent can punish the ending frames of the dodge, where your character is vulnerable to attack while still immobile. With this in mind, if you are certain that the opponent is about to attack then it may be in your best interest to dodge. If an attack is successfully dodged, your character will usually recover before the opponent recovers from the attack, allowing you to counter-attack with ease. With some attacks, though, this fact is not the case, and you should be wary of dodging attacks with little lag, as the opponent can often perform another attack before your recovery is over (example: Neutral-A infinites). Also be aware that some opponents will attempt to trick you into dodging. If they recognize that your response to the start up animation of an attack is simply to dodge, then these opponents may adapt and will attempt to charge the attack, so not only will you get hit by the attack, but it will be significantly stronger. |
