MLG Dallas Halo 3 Wrap Up

The 2008 MLG Dallas Halo 3 Playoffs have come and gone, leaving fans to pick their jaws up off the floor. We were treated to one of the most exciting finals in MLG history, as Triggers Down and Str8 Rippin required two five-game-series to determine a champion. In the end, Triggers Down found themselves on top for the second time this season, silencing the critics who counted them out after their sixth place finish in Toronto. Before any of this could happen though, a champion of the Open Playoff had to be crowned.

Open Playoff Recap

Heading into the event, seven teams had already secured a spot in the 2008 National Championships. One spot was up for grabs through the Open Playoff in Dallas, and the competition for this spot was fierce. Through 16 rounds of intense competition, each team fought to stay alive. As Saturday night wound down, only a few teams remained in the hunt for the final spot.

In the Losers Bracket Quarterfinals, we saw two teams attain revenge over the teams that defeated them in the Winners Bracket. Gotta Love the Sun, the only team remaining in the tournament who did not receive any byes, managed to come back from a 3-0 deficit against The Influence. A few stations over, Legendz managed to defeat the Florida Jackalopes. Earlier in the tournament, it was the Florida Jackalopes who shocked Legendz and their fans, as they pulled off the upset. This time, Legendz made sure to be on the top of their game, as a loss here would end their season, well short of where they hoped to end up. Taking five straight games from the Jackalopes, Legendz would live to fight another round.

In the next round, Legendz and Gotta Love The Sun did battle, with Legendz flexing their muscles in a 2-0 trouncing of the last remaining amateur team. Meanwhile, on the MLG Main Stage, the Winners Bracket Finals were already underway, as Breaking Point and the first seeded Antigravity battled it out for a spot in the Open Playoff Finals. In five thrilling games, Antigravity bested Breaking Point, sending them to the Losers Bracket where a talented Legendz team awaited them. It was here that Breaking Point took part in their second consecutive five-game-series, and unfortunately, their second consecutive loss. This was the end of the line for Breaking Point. Their season had come to an end.

Perhaps falling into the Losers Bracket wasn’t the worst thing that could have happened to Legendz. It gave them more time playing with each other, allowed them to isolate any flaws in their strategies, and gain some momentum heading into the Finals. Up until this point, it seemed that Tizoxic and Severince were going to continue their streak of finishing in the eighth spot, a feat they had achieved at every 2008 event prior to Dallas. The members of Legendz, however, had other plans.

Legendz made quick work of Antigravity, defeating them in two consecutive series. A stunned Antigravity team was heading home, their season ending just one win away from Vegas. After finishing eighth in four consecutive events, Tizoxic and Sevirence, with the help of Eli and GunShot, were unable to continue their mark of consistency. A jubilant Legendz team would join the seven other teams in Sunday’s Championship Bracket, as well as in the National Championships set to take place in Las Vegas next month.
