Grab Success Ratio

![]() Grabbing is one of the most vital aspects of any fighting game, and Smash is no different. If you never grab the opponent, then they can believe that all they will ever have to do against a potential approach is shield, if all you do is grab the opponent, then all they would ever need to do is sidestep. By grabbing just the right amount an opponent will be forced to stay on their toes. How many grabs should you attempt in any given match? Like everything else in Smash, it depends on your style and character, but for most matches you’ll want to attempt in the neighborhood of 10 grabs. Learning to grab when the opportunity presents itself and in the flow of battle takes time, never attempt to grab an opponent just to increase the average number of grabs you attempt in a game, as this can often be predictable. At the end of a match you can check the number of grabs you’ve attempted. The number of “throws” listed is the number of grabs that were landed successfully. For most characters these two categories will fall in a 2 to 3 ratio where for every 2 throws, you had attempted 3 grabs. Some characters, like the Ice Climbers or King Dedede, the number or throws/grabs should be much higher because a large part of their success in a match relies on chain grabbing or grab combos. For these characters, the number of grabs should be double to triple what a normal character would attempt. Figure out what works best for your character and keep track of your trends, grabbing is one of the easiest things to do, but is often the first thing that is forgotten in a tough match. |
