What is Spacing?

![]() Spacing refers to keeping a certain amount of space between your character and the opponents. The amount of space that is ideal varies depending on the specific match up. In general it is best to keep the opponent within range of your attacks but outside the range of their own. One of the best examples of this concept is with Marth. Marth’s sword functions as a disjointed hitbox, meaning that when it is swung the length of the sword can hit the opponent at no risk to himself (unlike, by contrast, most of Falcon’s attacks). With this in mind, Marth players will want to keep a position against the opponent that is just within reach of the sword or maybe slightly outside the reach. As the match progresses and the opponent moves around Marth will have to adapt and reposition constantly to keep this spacing intact. When both players are spacing well against each other there is often a tug of war, as players approach and retreat in tandem, constantly looking for an opening to get the upper hand. |
