Using Movement for Spacing

![]() The most common spacing method used in Melee was known as wavedashing. In Brawl, with wavedashing removed, other ways have arisen that allow players to move into the right spacing against an opponent. This is a run down of the most common of these spacing methods. Running/Dashing/Walking/Crawling: All of these techniques can be used to reposition your character but they largely depend on specific situations. The strongest and most often used is dashing because of its quick animation. The problem with dashing is that it has a slow turning animation. To compensate for this problem you can use the shield to cancel the dash animation and then drop the shield to return to the standing position. Walking and crawling are largely situational but can be help for very minute changes in positions. Finally, running is commonly used to rush down an opponent after an attack, thus keeping pressure on their recovery process. Air Attacks: Air attacks, in particular shuffled air attacks, are probably the most common method of spacing. After jumping you can vary the position of your character slightly right or left. You can also use the momentum from before you jump (running into a jump, for example) to vary the position even further. Finally, using air attacks after jumping helps keep the enemy from encroaching on your character. Character Specific Methods: Some characters have specific moves that can help with spacing. Here is a brief list of some of the more common character specific techniques that are used for spacing Ice Climbers: Desynced ice blocks or blizzards Diddy Kong: Dribbling Samus: Short hop missiles or bombs Bowser: Infinite clawing Falco: Shuffled reflectors or double lasers |
