Recovering with Olimar

![]() Olimar is one of the few characters with a tether recovery as his main tool for getting back to the stage. Tether recovery characters are generally in their weakest position when recovering parallel or from beneath the stage. An opponent can block Olimar’s tether recovery (Up-B) by simply hanging onto the edge of the stage, known as edge-hogging. However, there are some steps that can be taken to make up for the weaknesses in Olimar’s recovery: 1. Use Olimar’s Down-B move to call all of his pikmin back to him and reorder them, this can be done multiple times to change the starting pikmin 2. Use Olimar’s second jump 3. Attempt to remove any edge-hoggers by throwing a purple pikmin 4. Up-B There are some variations to this that may be helpful, but even with the variations Olimar is still very limited in recover options. • The purple pikmin, when thrown, is the only one that will knock an edge-hogger from the edge-hog position. However, throwing a purple pikmin may not always be your best option; If your opponent is at a high percent and you are each on the same stock, you may simply want to Up-B. If the edge-hogger is holding onto the edge when the purple pikmin connects then they may be KO’d by getting stage spiked. This is risky against experienced players who may time their rolls to avoid the hit from the pikmin. • When at higher damages it may be wise to use your Side-B less often and to always make sure you have as close to the max number of pikmin as possible. The more pikmin you have, the further your tether recovery will reach. • It may be helpful to jump before performing the Down-B move in order to cancel momentum from a hit. • If you save your jump, your best bet to remove an edge-hogger is likely to fall parallel to the stage, jump, and then hit the edge-hogger with an air attack. • The Up-B does give Olimar is a slight boost which can be the difference maker in getting above the edge of the stage. |
