![]() At tournaments, every character (including all of the ‘hidden’ characters) is allowed. There has been some debate about the validity of Meta Knight at tournaments, whereas some view Meta Knight to be heavily imbalanced against the rest of the cast and the game would be better with him banned. There are typically only a handful of tournaments though that run with Meta Knight banned, and a universal country-wide ban of the character is highly unlikely. Most of the debate centered between the months of August-November of 2008; since this time period the debate has died down. While every character is allowed in tournaments, it should be understood that not every character has an equal chance of winning. Fighting games inherently have tiers, whereas some characters are simply better than others. The characters that do the best at tournaments are usually referred to as top or high tier characters, while the characters that do the worst are referred to as low or bottom tier characters. Judging how good a character is can be difficult because a large skill imbalance between two players can make up for the gap between character ability. Most judgments that revolve around characters are made based solely on upper echelon player when characters can be compared when they are being utilized at their peak of ability. |
