View Full Version : The 1st Weapon MLG Should Already BAN - Flamethrower
TWISTED-BULLET

I'll make this one short, if anyone has seen the multiplayer video's with the flamethrower in 1st person mode you'll see that it has absolute power. If I compare the power to a sword; Its basically a sword with a huge amount of range and even without testing I can already say that MLG will not use the weapon. Probably the most overpwered weapon I've ever seen.
Has anyone seen it being used in 1st person mode? Its insaine, absolutely ZERO skill, welcome to matchmaking guys.
SHOCKING - http://www.gametrailers.com/player/24150.html
EDIT - Bungie has said in one of the podcast that the flamethrower will only be availble in the campaign and the forge editor.

wow...ya that flame thrower was pretty nuts. However, it looked like it has some spaghetti style shooting (meaning if you move quickly from one direction to the other, the flame will not move as fast). The fact that it does damage even after you are done shooting is pretty lame..It seems similar in power and distance to the H1 shotty maybe a bit more powerful because of the after effects.

Brute Shotgun, it's a weaker shotgun you can dual wield.
I've never played Halo PC, but I'd rather play the game before making nxing it out based on gameplay of unknown caliber players. The sword was completely overpowering in the beggining of Halo 2, now people know it's limitations and adjust their gameplay accordingly. Play it before you judge.
Let's not ignore the fact that both of the players in that game are seriously horrendous at Halo 3. I'm sure there is a limit to the effectiveness you can have with a flamethrower (speed, agility, range, ammo) and it can most likely be countered effectively with even a decent player's ability.

The flamethrower can easily be countered with a bubble shield, portable shield (the one from Halo CE) or just good common sense. If you continually strafe, the flames won't keep up with you and then you can take over. Noobs can utilize any weapon, but what seperates them from us is using it effectively and smartly.

A ncounter, I'll give an example of Shadowrun - one player buys enhanced vision so you can see where the enemies are, the counter to that is to buy smoke, and you no longer appear on the enhanced vision radar. A counter is to directly counter another player so you are on a even playfield, to counter a flamethrower you'd need a water pistol, then your countering a player, which makes his weapon control obselete.
The bubble shield is a semi counter which last for around 12 seconds or so, halo doesn't provide counters its weapins are situational. Distance and a BR is the only counter I really see.

It only looks overpowered because of the skill level of the players. I can see a number of counters already.
- Because it's a heavy weapon, they will have a lot of trouble dodging mid range weapons (EASY four shot) and grenades
- It's certainly not a good thing to use around team mates "easy betrayals there"
- Jumping might help
- It's not very mobile
- You can easily flank them without worrying about grenades or beat downs
- It's probobly the most effective 1v1, unless 2 people are stupid enough to walk in a straight line
- It's hard to chase people with it
- You have to drop it to use grenades
- It's strictly CQC "close quarters combat"
- Doesn't have the mobility advantage of the sword
- You have to sacrifice your primary weapon to pick it up
Overall, a mid range weapon start wouldn't make it such a power full weapon. Whether MLG should use it or not is not something I have an opinion of. But, I can say that this weapon isn't as powerful las Halo 2's sword, which highlights a number of weakness already.
The H2 sword, was a very mobile weapon actually. You can zip to places in an instant, making the user hard to shoot at if the victims in unfortunate positions were caught of guard. And if you happen to be i na position to help, your sensitivity may be a problem if he kills your friend from a certain angle. In addition to that, you could use grenades, and you can easily switch to your second weapon and switch back depending on the situation.
This is all speculation ,but I am confident that this weapon is not as powerful as everyone says it is. In a one vs one situation, perhaps it is. But position, location, and mobility are easy counters against the flamethrower.
P.S. I don't think this weapon will make it into MLG play, but I will stand ground and say that this weapon is not as overpowered as many of you think it is.

I agree with the last two posts. People do things for fun too. I mean think about it, if you got some mad triple kill, why should anyone bother shouting "TRIPPLE KILL!!" when most of the time, all you get is "oh okay, good job.". But you gotta admit, it was fun to call it out.
In the announcers situation, he's calling out the "highlights" of the game, and people like it. In a situation like that, it will keep the crowds attention. He may not be the best announcer, but he's keeping the crowds attention.
Well, in the case of the triple kill, only one person is jumping for joy. In the announcers case, he made people feel the tension that the players were feeling. At least, in such a way where the crowd can understand it.
They aren't hardcore gamers. They are just people who want to have a good experience. Some of them might be, and I'm sure they were critical about the game and the players. But, they were having a good time. At least it's safe to assume they were. I take that on faith. Otherwise, you'd have a dead crowd.
I'm sure most of us (including me) can't do any better than that guy did. At least he said things a certain way. Like "OH SH***". hahaha, well, you know what I mean.

This is not going to play the same as H2. It will be a different game and take completely different strats. if you didnt notice almost every gun on Gaurdian was a power weapon. I like the VARIETY. It keeps a game from getting boring. The flame thrower can take skill to use in the perfect situations. If you noticed the guy was almost point blank when he gets hit with it, obviously he is going to die. I hope that most people on MLG will get over the all BR start mentality for this game and accept change. This game isnt made for MLG. I love MLG just as much as anyone here but Bungie makes games the way they think will be fun and if you dont like it dont play. Too much complaining about a game that so many of us worship and have been waiting on for so long. I will play with any gun any map at any time at any event. I will adapt, thats what makes people skilled.

Actually, most of those power weapons were added on the map with forge.
Also, MLG is going to edit Bungie's maps with Forge to make Halo 3 take skill. That doesn't mean no variety, but it does mean there isn't going to be a flamethrower, rocket launcher, sword, hammer, sniper, laser, beam rifle, and gun turret on the same map...

After seeing it in first-person that flamethrower is completely ridiculous. It killed that one guy in like half a second, and then he caught himself on fire and died. On a small map with tight corridors it would be very dangerous but in a medium or larger map it would not be anywhere near as effective. I doubt MLG will use it, just like they probably wont use portable turrets and such but like Bungie said in the podcast(with EGM i think) it is very powerful but only for certain situations.

If Bungie puts power weapons alll over the place in MM, I wouldn't mind at all. In fact, I'd preferr it that way.
Two reasons.
1 - If it's going to be AR start, I want to always be able to pick up a powerful weapon.
2 - I play MM to have fun and not play seriously. With power weapons all over the place, I could have some mindless fun and not have to think too hard.
Because you gotta admit, if you don't want to play seriously, a map full of power weapons like in those videos would be more fun than competitive settings would be.

Well, the announcer did say that this is a made varient, and not the default layout, actually the guy that is in charge of editing weapons on map is actually a BR whore, and is fully awhere of the balancing issues halo 2 had with poor weapon placements ie- colossus sniper.
I actually think mm should be quite balanced, hgih ground and valhalla were setup quite well, Snowbound with the default beta layout was absolutely terrible though. The assault rifle isn't actually a terrible weapon this time around.
stop jumping to conclusions, you havent even played the ****ing game yet and you are saying a weapon is OP. Please in a podcast they even said it was UNDERPOWERED and that they felt that it wouldnt be very useful. Like I've said before and will say no, you really cant tell until you play the game. You cant say MM is going to suck because you dont even know if Bungie will put it in there.
With forge and the hundreds of customizable options in custom games, anything could be possible.
But think about this though. The flamethrower seems to have a pretty small range. You walk slower with it, you turn slower with it. Sure, it kills fast, but so does a shotgun at that range (or, it should). The flamethrower is a power weapon so its obviously going to be powerful.

That was so terrible I can't find words strong enough. It was Rocket, Sword, Flamethrower, Rocket, Sword.... horrible. Map Default Halo 3 is going to be a nightmare.
Actuall I recall reading that it was not the map default. They put alot of heavy weapons on there to show off graphics/ woo the crowd.

It looks disgusting, I won't be putting it any gametypes, though as someone mentioned, it does look like fun for friends to play. I don't know, but I am sure loving the expiration of the energy sword.
