View Full Version : Does the lag feel worse in Halo3?

I've played many games on Halo2 and I honestly cannot remember the amount of lag that I've been experiencing so far on Halo3 in Halo2.

I can literally shoot someone in the head 3 times perfectly with a BR and the shots will not register. I even re-watch the videos and see the bullets actually connect to their head but their shields will not diminish.

I've been told I have to lead considerably but even in a close BR battle my bullets do not register. I'm on a cable connection but I honestly cannot believe I'm the only getting BS'ed because of my shots do not register yet I have a full green connection.

So, is the lag worse in halo3 or is just my connection?

Apparently Bungie are using an obscene amount of bandwidth compression techniques, and bandwidth control prioritization. What this means is when you play BTB on sandtraps and you see players skipping all over the place; this is a compression technique where the game registers an enemies importance to a player in distance. A player can hear this by the sound of the weapons in the game, weapons sound normal in the game then there obviously close, but get outside of this range and there position is prioritized because of the range. It's funny that Bungie have some of the biggest maps in halo history and there very open for everybody to see.

Halo 3 chooses host in a much more accurate way so you don't need all this compression techniques over Live, if you run halo 2 or halo 3 over XBC you will see that the netcode on both games are actually amazing. This also why alot of players just blame xbox live and think it's laggy when it isn't, you can achieve anything over XBL and technically because your not using a pc bridge like XBC; you could get absolutely amazing results.

I think halo 3 is even more of a pig on XBL than halo 2, there's certain things like latency over Live that have been improved, but there's still way to much packet loss on a good host for compression techniques even in 4v4's, and even in 1v1's.

Again, halo 3 over LAN and Live represent 2 completely different games, just like halo 2.

Connections in halo 3 seem to be amazing, unfortuanetly the game doesn't run amazing.

Also, I've seen what your talking about, I've watched video's where bullets actually hit but there's no shield registration whats so ever, could be a client side bug, but it happen on host too.

i might be wrong, but it could of been yesterday or last saturday. only for a little yesterday but for a while saturday XBL was acting a little weird, probably from bungie working or something. but other than that id say its your connection.

No... for the most part I haven't felt anywhere near the lag I had in H2... and it's incredible that my English buddies can play and have a good, lag free experience as well...

It feels worse sometimes because there is less magnetism, but I doubt it's very different. I just have to lead now, when in Halo 2 I didn't have to hit them for a shot to register.

At least you can shoot across the map now online. Even with the spread, I kill people much faster than in H2 at long-range.
