View Full Version : Do exercises and energy drinks effect gameplay?

i have been wondering if exercises and energy drinks effect gameplay...? because i feel that when i drink a Monster Energy or a Red Bull i do well... Also after i play basketball or do any physical activity that it also improves gameplay.. Is it because your reaction time increases? Maybe your blood and your adrenaline start flowing? Anyone got an answer to this??

As far as energy drinks go, every person is different. I have too much energy and therefore cannot play Halo and drink redbull. The combination would result in 2-0-50 stats for me. However some people play better with them. As far as Exercise goes, studies have shown that increased blood flow and coordination can improve gameplay. Also, adrenaline causes the body to react quicker and remember things more accurately and help you focus...So, in the end it's kinda up to you.

There is a certain aspect of each of those techniques that can make you more aware and sharpen reflexes, but each also may have it's downfall as well.

Exercise will certainly wake you up, but depending how vigorous it is, it may also take you down after the initial adrenaline rush from activity.

Energy drinks will pick you up and maybe hold you up for a while, but they may also cause you to be jittery and almost universally give you a sudden drop off when the caffeine and sugar wear off.

So yeah they help, but depending who you are, they might hurt you right away, or even have a delayed effect.

(by hurt you I mean gameplay, not physically)

i find that chugging a redbull makes me more aware and play better than i uslly do.

i tend to concentrate more too.

and + i get cranky and annoyed sometimes

Well you get adrenaline going and your blood is flowing, it makes you alert of everything and your muscles are ready to move. So it makes you quicker, this is why you see most pros are not overweight. They work out a lot.

monster hurts my gameplay, along with any other energy drink other than Red Bull. you should def. just drink some Red Bull for sure, yup thats how final boss wins.

Well when strongside noscoped the space time vortex, all of final boss got sucked in and tranferred to an earlier time, with the same skills...Thats why strongside is so good...he keeps getting better, and transferring himself back to get even more better! LOL...

Or...Ogre thought it'd be funny to make his profile really young...whichever reason you want ;)

energy Drinks give me a headache and make me shake. I was brawling not too long go at about 1 at night. I one my first 4 match-ups then had time to wait around... had a Monster and drank it fast because I was about to be up. i was shaky and unfocused... lost my next two matchups.

Just an interesting MLG article that I found amongst the dust.

I think it has been proven that physical exercise has beneficial effects on your mental action.

And about the energy drinks, I think a lot of it is mental. Of course there are some chemical reactions that happen when you drink them but I feel like for me the result is more mental than physical.

Good find on that article!

Oh, and the chemicals in Red bull and such is suppose to 'Vitalize your mind'. I'm not too sure of this though..

Monster on the other hand... It also has alot of the same chemical properties as Red Bull.. In a bigger can... Plus the Lo-Carb Monster tastes yummy:) unlike the Sugar-free Red Bull..

I'll do some more research on the chemical properties of them though..

Energy drinks can make you jittery and distracted, Exercise can make you tired and lethargic.

I'll throw you some points on both.

Exercise:
Exercise/working out improves your gameplay without a doubt. Working out daily will improve your reflexes, circulation, reaction time, coordination, and many more things. Your physical health isn't the only thing that increases, your confidence and mental well being also change. Overall, a daily workout regiment will directly improve your gameplay(as long as you don't noob it up and work out too much, always remember to practice your game! ;) ).

Energy Drinks:
Monster, Red Bull, Bawls, Jolt!, SoBe, etc. You name it, I won't drink it! These things will improve your reflexes and reaction time but it's obviously only temporary. You start to come down off of the rush you get and you're gameplay deteriorates rapidly and before you know it, you're playing 2-4x worse than before the rush. In my opinion, energy drinks are not the way to go. If you want to improve your gameplay, work out a few times a week, and practice your game hard... practice hard and practice the right way.

On a side note. Although I disapprove of energy drink use, an energy drink binge during a tournament is a whole different story. It can secure a win for you at a local tournament, maybe even get you a round further at an MLG event. But remember it's not gonna turn you into Final Boss. Also, always keep in mind its negative side effects on your health.

Long term. Exercise > Energy drinks.
Immediate results. Energy drinks > Exercise.

Experiment, use both properly and who knows how you'll be playing a month from now.

Wow, Nice post. I have realized that after drinking a few energy drinks that your games could go down.. but i started spacing them out in a more organized order.. which still doesn't work all the time..

I still like my exercise way.. I do 20 push-ups (alternate with sit-ups) every game i lose, go negative, or don't meet my expectations.

My advise would be to buy the cheap energy drinks from walmart called Rip Its. I find that they work pretty fast but also wear off a bit fast. But man oh man when you chug em down they work wonders lol.

Also, a quick word of advise. Do not ever try to play halo while you are sick with an out of this world fever. It ain't happening lol. I did this weekend and I am saddened :(.

To the original poster, yea physical activity before Halo improves gameplay alot, anything that requires quick reaction time and physical activity will improve your game IMO.

I know for a fact after from a long day of snowboarding (park only) i come back to halo, tired as hell, and my game is on hit, more so then normal. Same goes with tennis.

well try this.
in michigan (were i live) if you go outside long enough your hands get cold and you suck at gaming.
anyone got any suggestions the quickly warm up hands.

other than that the whole energy thing depends on the person.

Working out definately improves my gameplay. I've said this for quite sometime, that all these kids that play all day will never be able to play at maximum capacity due to lack of physical activity.

I jog on the treadmill while I play at around 5 mph.

Sometimes when I'm in the middle of a clutch or important play, however, I fall off the treadmill and fail epicly.

I try to do any random exercise before I play, but by the time I get in a game, my hands are already cold again, and I suck for my first few games.

Personally when I drink an energy drink, I do worse. I get overwhelmed, and angry and end up doing horrible. I prefer to relax, and drink Gatorade G2. That stuff is the s***.

Well, after I go play like soccer or something outside im sweaty, and after I play halo a little bit it makes my hands sweaty.

And both of those combined, it truely makes a diffrence.

Before I started exercising, I played ok, my ranked KD ratio was at 1.04. After months of exercise, my ranked KD ratio went up to 1.08 and finally hit 45. I know that ranked doesn't mean a lot, but I did notice an improvement in game play in ranked and in customs. You don't get as frustrated (for me at least) and you get "in the zone" much more often.

Not to mention exercise is good for your health!
