View Full Version : Massive Forging Space Discovered

I read this a while ago but I haven't seen any threads about it so I thought I would share.

Basically it seems a lot of forgers are having space issues with foundry. Well apparently someone found a massive empty area on blackout. It seems like it is much bigger than foundry both length/width wise and height wise too.

Here is a copy of the article on HBO and a link to some pictures:

Room to grow
Whoa. Remember when we mentioned a large area outside of Blackout that could be used by Forgers to build new open-field layouts? It's been hard to get a sense of how big that area really is; you can't see it, after all. pete_the_duck made things easier for us by outlining the edges with boxes... and yeah, it's pretty huge. Wow.

I can see budget issues since a floor has to be made however I thought it would be valuable for some of the elite forgers to know about.

So what do you guys think, any potential with this new open space?

Can't see it working for competitive maps tbh. Not enough budget/scenery for a large enough map, especially since you have to build the floor. Plus, i'd imagine that if a floor isn't built in areas, players could just drop down onto Blackout itself...

Correct me if i'm wrong :???:

I'm taking a look at Pete's canvas now. If it is what I think it is, this may very well have even more potential than that of a map being made on Avalanche.

Can't wait to see it. I'm thinking you won't need as many objects...building in mid-air could save tons of objects...exciting stuff

Just looked at it.

I'm glad the "canvas" has marked the boundaries, but the fact that you can jump down to blackout itself kinda screws it, unless someone mans up and save-and-quits & intertwine a suitable foundation in the air to build off of. (walls, bridges, Boxes).

I'm talking roughly 1/4th that area of what was shown, maybe even a rectangle. It's decently sized. The forged map, if someone does forge up there will only be restricted to 2 levels without physically being able to hit the death boundary in gameplay. I'm guessing, and will have a tough time with budget - making it so it's not possible to jump down to blackout.

Kudos to the poor soul who actually takes the time to do all this for the many. In fact now that I'm flying around in it, the far side of the area that is closest to the ocean/horizon/ Northern lights might just be plausible knowing that hitting the very top of lift side is an instant death.

Well good luck to anyone who does it... lol

edit: It looks like it can house a 3-4 level map, my bad, cool Ideas starting to flow again...

Yeah, I have a crazy racetrack in that area... its pretty tight.

What do you do to start building up there?

is there a link to the avalanche one? this one looks good but i think it might be small because of budget.

damn...being able to jumpdown pretty much invalidates the area

Avalanche has some good spots for air-forging. But to have enough room for 4's, you'd have to build on the land too...then you'd have to close off the land. Don't know if you'd have enough blocks left over to really do a whole lot.

I was really hoping we could air-forge more on the new maps...that'd solve so many of the problems associated with working with huge blocks :/

Just looked at it.

If anyone wants to explore this area in mongoose race-track form, go to my fileshare. Un4giving night or somehting like that

Looks like there'd be plenty of room and materials to make a Quake-style floating platform map that would be quite competitive. Basically, you don't sweat the fact that there's no floor and make the whole level floating platforms with walkways - like Lockout itself, only with more propensity for falling off. Putting a rocket launcher or bruteshot could create some awesome awareness kills where you knock somebody off of a treacherous part of the level. I'll think about conjuring up a platform map design in sketchup.

You must be talking about Br3.

On a serious note, Is making a map plausible? I'm not a forger but wouldn't a lot of the scenery and budget be used just making a floor?

I CAN MAKE MY QUAKE 3 MAP!

If you could make it away from blackout itself I think the idea of a map made entirely of floating platforms is pretty cool. Lot's of falling to death and whatnot.

Wow, i think there may be a lot of potential here. Not only here but on Avalanche as well. i can't wait to see what some of the forgers might come up with.

Think about it, if we, the gamers, were able to make a map of our own and control the basic design down to the very spawns, it would be great. Think of the possibilities. Great find.

Great find. I just hope someone can make enough time to forge a competitive map with so much space but so few resources.

i guess it could maybe be used,
but someone's gonna waste a ton of time trying to make a competitive map and MLG's gonna think it sucks.

wow thats a pretty good find, not sure it there will be anything great made out of it though but we will see i guess

I know it sucks making a floor with the budget restraints but I think being able to build off the side of blackout so that maps can now have death pits would be amazing. Anybody up for trying a damnation remake?
Although I know it wont be the same without fall damage :(

For those saying it would cost too much budget to build the floor, you gotta realize that we don't have to build an entire floor like foundry, the map can be made out of floating platforms in midair, that if you fall off of, you die. Kinda like Quake style maps.

I think this is a great idea, but I think instead of building it directly over the map, it would be a better idea to find a place off of the side of the map to build it. That way, you can't fall directly into the real level. This is such a good idea though, you could have man-cannon launches to different plats, brute shots (as somebody else said), there is so much potential with this idea. Nice thinking!

That would be a huge slap in bungie's face if it actually got used in MLG. I would laugh. Too bad bungie never listens to their hardcore community. Except for the MLG playlist. ;)

Wow this gave me a great idea! What if Bungie gave us some sort of blank level to build stuff on?!?

WTF do you mean that's what Foundry's for?! Surely if the map was for mostly Forging, they would have made it long, wide, tall, and have flat walls!

this is a good find-- when blackout came out, I spent a few hours trying to brake the invizy wall, and did. However, I would always be pushed back into the game space. I was trying to get to a blank area on the side of blackout. I think this sky canvas will work, and will probably make something with it in the next couple of months.

I remember playing a custom game on that map lol

Anyways are there any steps you have to take before being able to forge up there? Is there some sort of invisible ceiling you have to pass by or something?

There's a huge area behind Library where you could easily build a map, and you can't jump onto Blackout.

Also, what is the actual trick to get out of the blackout confines?
