View Full Version : Use of Shield Doors

I was thinking about shield doors and they could be very interesting if put to use correctly. Take a closed room in a foundry map for example, or a base, if you put a shield door flat against the roof it would allow for visibility into other areas without being able to shoot in, like a glass door. Is there a specific reason why they are not used in foundry maps?

They don't work competitively for a few reasons
1. It doesn't really work like a glass door because you can still move through it.
2. The biggest problems with them is how they work with short range weapons (in MLGs case, the Mauler).
3. The ability to melee someone through it makes it unbalanced.
4. Generally in competitive play, being able to see someone but not shoot them slows down the game considerably (which is why I have no hope for Purple Reign's windows).
I don't mind them being used as an asthetic on Foundry maps, but not for gameplay

I agree with you argument about shield doors, but as far as Purple Reign goes, I don't see the windows being a problem. We can probably just plaster something overtop of them in Forge.

Ive been messing around using shield doors by merging them with boxes so that only a 3rd extends out of the box. My thought is that they could be used as regular cover, but look cooler. And I think it would be difficult to abuse with close range weapons.

The only thing I see shield doors being used for is just style. If used right somebody could make a map look sick with em.

check out Runner AI's map Riverside, It has a nice use of shield doors that can't be abused.

Yeah, most shield doors I see are purely reserved for aesthetics, usually water. I only use shield doors for
-water visuals
-windows (combined with fence wall)
-Zombie spawn areas in Infection maps
-protecting gravlifts that aren't meant to be destroyed
and lastly
-the visors that I make in my giant helmet maps
But I think the real problem with shield doors is camping. You can't kill a camper like Last Man Standing in an Infection game, when he's behind a shield door and has a shotgun until he gets to a reload or runs out of ammo. And also the fact that Fusion Coils on the other side can blow up when a grenade blast goes through the door.

I got a map i made "MLG The Perch" It uses shield doors...what i did with them was i interlocked them with fence walls, that way you cannot use them as powerpoints like snowbound, but you can see on the other side of the wall, pluse it creates good colour.

Yeah check out Birdos map, it took a lot of time to make. With a few revisions, I can see it being a VERY competitive map.

I actually think there is a case where a shield door is a good idea.
Please examine the back-sniper tower on MLG Blockout. This was not my idea, either...it was just the first time I've seen it put to that sort of use.

This was H3_Proto's idea, but I did the map.

I just saw this use of them on forgehub so I decided to post it. Some guy, for blocking, used KOTH and made - points for out of the hill.Made only way to gain points as kills inside the hill. Then he put up a little blockade around where you could walk out, and to make a bit more of a substantial blockade he used shield doors, so any 'nades wouldn't bounce out of the map to where they do no damage. Pretty cool use. Only works for slayer, then, however. Unless you use KOTH so contesting gives no points, and the max score is 1- then it'd be a "staying alive" gameetype, where if your whole team is dead at once, they win.

Haha...attempting to get downloads? Is that really an "issue" to worry about around here?
Lol...anyway...I have yet to take a picture of the new setup...but the basic idea is the shield door made a good replacement for the "nade wall" on my revision of Blackout.
Instead of a concrete object for people to jump on, and/or use as some kind of map object...I replaced the door with a shield door. Now...no one can stand on the door, and the shield actually provides the "bounce" needed for a nade wall to become effective...without blocking any line of site or impacting player movement. Like I said...it's more of a "situational" thing to be used on open-edged maps...but it works for what it's designed for, and that is just to give an extra nade-spot to the map in order to make a certain (open edged) position less abusive or powerful.
Also...due to the fact that it is placed on the "ouside edge" of the map, people can't use it for cover or abuse it by hiding behind it, thus, it cannot be used as a "blockade" or any sort.
I'll take a picture when I get on later to show you exactly what I'm talking about...but since you (sabaoth) discussed this nade wall with me in that thread I made...I figured I'd go ahead and leave you a response now.
Picture later.
