View Full Version : Competitive 1v1 Breakthrough

I recently had a breakthrough on how 1v1's should be played, the problem with the current competitive 1v1 maps and way that they are played. People are trying to make the perfect 1v1 map, well, it's not possible. There is no one way to test all the individual skills Halo provides with one map, just like there is no way to test a teams worth on a single map thats why they have 11 Gametypes on the circuit. There needs to be a series of maps that as a whole test the individual skill needed to perform well in every situation, and in regard to this it is determining the way I will continue to build Knockout, to provide the one aspect that I see missing in every other 1v1 map, the element to counter your opponents every move.

I thought I would post this for anyone else looking to build a competitive 1v1 map, and my inspiration to post the following post in the GB 1v1 thread:

Archetype - Focus on individual BR skill and Flow.
Greenhouse - Map positioning, Power-Up timing, Part 1 of 2 Sniper Skill.
Knockout - 2 of 2 Sniper Skill, Ability to counter opponents every move.

With these three maps and playing all three twice on reciprical hosts(Each player hosts each map once) is the best way to determine individual skill, with a 4th map being needed to designed as a tie breaker incase the series is tied, or tally all points and the winner is the person with the most points. Either way each series would take to long for MLG to make it a competitivly viable tournament option, but that is baisically all we got for now.

Each map does provide other skils needed to win but I'm to lazy to type it all. This is honestly the best we got for now.

This thread kinda voids Cryo. Although I might see how my 1v1 Foundry sketchup fits in.

Nice post there, only thing I disagree with is that you only have one map focused on one area. I think two in some cases might be good (like we have Multiple slayer maps in mlg that don't necessarilly focus on different skills in all cases but contain different layouts).

This thread just gave me the best idea ever though, I'll pm it to you later (tak) to get some feedback on it.

Sorry about that man, but this is just a breakthrough I had and felt the need to share. I would still make Cryo if I were you because it could be used on par with one of these maps or instead of it, variety is not a bad thing and seeing as this probably won't catch on as much as I hope it is still worth making. Also like I said in the quoted posted there still may be need for a 7th gmaetype/map in case of tiebreakers so I say continue making it.

EDIT: Just saw Lightz post and responding to it now.

This is exactly what I was saying above to Ciabatta about Cryo, having seen the layout I think it could be used along side Greenhouse for the same effect. I will be waiting for your PM because you have peaked my intrest as to this "best idea ever"

It completely makes sense. Thats why when i play 1v1s i chose a map i like and a map my opponent likes and then we both decide on the third map if we each win a game.
