Halo 3's service tags all had the same basic layout of 1 letter and then 2 numbers, but with ODST we can choose any 4 numbers, letters, symbols, punctuations etc. to be our service tag.

The ODST service tag system is so far superior to Halo 3's. So much better than saying "KAY FOURTY-THREE, BEHIND YOU!" When half the people don't even know their own service tag, or are at least not accustomed to responding to it.
