* Run around. Sometimes dropping the ball to fight isn’t the best option. Unlike King of the Hill, the map strategies on oddball are determined by where a team wants to hold it. So if you can make an escape and rack up 10, 20 or even 30 extra seconds you are doing a great thing for the team.
*Drop , throw, pick up. Anticipate the enemy's movement by throwing grenades and picking the ball right back up. This move will allow the score to go up while also giving you the extra damage needed when an enemy gets that first shot on you because the ball must be dropped in order to fire.
* Pass. Sometimes it makes sense to hand the ball off to a teammate. Maybe they are up a lift (the ball travels on lifts) or you have a power weapon and drop the ball to clear an area for your teammate to hold the ball. Make sure you’re mindful of who has what weapon so you can also step in to hold the ball if a teammate has a weapon that should be put to use.
* Play the ball! A play ball is when the ball resets back to its initial position. This happens when, one, the ball drops off the map and, two, when no one has touched the ball for a long enough period (ball reset) or, three, if someone throws the ball back to or near its original position, it serves the same purpose as playing it.
Keeping in mind both basic and advanced ball tips will make you an effective carrier. Strong objective carriers will make themselves a factor despite the handicap of not being able to fire as much as their teammates. Some of the most impressive games of Halo are when someone manages to rack up a high kill count while still earning a lot of ball time.

You can drop the ball, toss a grenade and pick it back up, sacrificing little ball time while holding off the enemy at the same time.

Always, always remember that if you're in trouble you can toss the ball off the map on Guardian. This causes a "play ball", which takes the ball back to its top middle respawn point.
