Protecting the ball is a job for everyone on the team. As the ball carrier you obviously have different objectives than defenders.
Ball Carrier
* Nade when you know the enemy will be close. Protecting your perimeter will keep the enemy at bay and allow for valuable extra seconds.
* Turn your back and run. Sometimes protecting the ball can mean putting it up against your belly and hitting the road! Do not, however, run if it will only result in a useless death.
* Drop and fight. If the entire enemy breaks through towards the ball, chances are your team needs help. Drop the ball, fight, and hopefully you or a teammate will be alive after the dust settles to start gaining more time.
Defenders
* A defender must communicate with everyone to position themselves for map control. Ultimately, defending means maintaining map control while still allowing one of the four players to get ball time – so it’s a tough job.
* Know positions. Try to have setups wherever you hold the ball. One of the best ways to gain time is to throw a new strategy in the enemy's face. They won’t know how to break a new setup. The element of surprise can result in a lot of ball time.
* Mind the power items. Do not forget about power-ups and power weapons. The defenders need to work that out amongst themselves so that they are still in control of the items that can really ruin a great setup. If you control these and position yourselves properly, you should have no trouble winning the game and rolling up a high kill count along the way.

It will be necessary to drop the ball and fire to help out your teammates in any oddball game.
