Advanced Jumping Techniques

![]() Below is a rundown of the advanced jumping techniques used in Halo 3. Many of these are extremely hard to pick up at first and require tremendous patience. Having a friend show you in-game how to do these jumps is the fastest way to learn, as they can pinpoint what you’re doing wrong and change it quickly. That being said, understanding the basic technique in words and watching several videos will help your cause. Many thanks to Eggos for an explanation of these advanced techniques. Ghost Edging-- Ghost edges allow you to jump up to places that seemingly have no ledge below them. The trick is to hit a corner on your first jump, which tricks the game into thinking you’ve landed, allowing you to jump up above that corner. To do it, hold crouch and forward in the air after you jump. Next, hit the wall just below the corner, uncrouch, and hit jump at the same time. Ghost edging works on pretty much any corner if you can hit it right, so once you get down the basic technique, go experiment! Ghost Jumps-- The same thing as ghost edging, but, instead of using corners or edges, you use slight indents in walls, rocks, or other objects. High Jumps-- High jumps allow you to propel yourself up a slanted surface. A classic example of this is the window jump on Zanzibar/Last Resort. Simply hit a slanted wall at the right angle (you’ll achieve this through practicing) and it will propel you upwards. This move uses the principle that if you walk up certain ramped surfaces and into a wall, your feet are moved slightly upwards, allowing your jump to be “higher.” Over Jump-- Over Jumping returns from Halo 2 in its same form. Run towards a jump that you can make by crouching, right when you hit the top ledge of whatever you’re jumping onto (say from the ground to the top of a box) uncrouch and jump again (so you’re uncrouching and jumping simultaneously). When done correctly, the first jump is just barely landed, allowing the player to gain speed. Then immediately you propel yourself upwards with greater speed allowing the second jump to be higher than normal. Air Jumping-- Same technique as the over jump, but the second jump is unneeded. Hold crouch in the air after the jump. After you’re above the object, uncrouch while continuing to hold forward. This move will not put you as far in the air as an over jump, but if the second area you’re trying to reach is low, it will propel you there swiftly. Curve Jumping-- In a curve jump, you jump past an object blocking you and then hold left or right to veer yourself towards your goal. This technique is especially useful if an object stands between you and the ledge you are trying to jump to. The basic purpose of curve jumping is to allow the player to maneuver themselves in mid-air Slide Jumps-- Slide jumping uses ramps and other slanted geometries to propel oneself forward at a greater distance than would otherwise be possible. To achieve a slide jump, stand above the ramp or slanted surface (remember it might just be a ledge with a slight curve to it; you don’t need much space to make a slide jump happen) and jump on to it. When in mid-air, crouch. Upon landing, uncrouch while jumping again. This uncrouching and jumping will allow you to achieve sliding action to increase speed thus propelling you forward like a cannonball. Equipment Jumping-- This technique allows you to throw a piece of equipment (energy drainers make it harder) and jump off it. Jump once, then look straight down, hit X to throw down the piece of equipment, and then hit jump immediately afterward. You can utilize this technique to jump across wide gaps or to reach places that are really high. If you’re not the host, looking slightly upwards will make the jump easier to accomplish. Head Jumps-- You can jump off your teammate's head. Use this to get to places otherwise impossible to reach. Remember that the bottom person can jump up in the air after his or her teammate jumps off the head to provide a second boost. In Halo 2, head jumping was one of the most popular advanced jumping techniques used in competitive play. Remember to check out the videos detailing these jumps as it’s very hard to get them down without visual examples. Check out the Gameroom for plenty of tutorials and jump videos. |
