There are two ways to get into an opponent’s head; in game and out of the game. Over the microphone or in person, taunting an opponent verbally can be used to your advantage. Of course, taking things too far will land you a warning from the referees at a LAN event and over Xbox Live, players will utilize the mute feature. Talking trash can be good-natured and strategic, but never take it too far as it will ultimately work against you; players who spend too much time focusing on taunting the opposition tend to lose focus on the game at hand.

In-game taunting can involve crouching up and down on your opponent’s head. Other variations of in-game insults include shooting a player’s dead body and smacking their corpse. In Halo 3 the corpse smack has reached new heights because it now flops around like a rubber chicken and can even be pushed off of the map in certain areas. While strong players are immune to such behavior, the weak ones will fume like teapots. A well placed corpse hump can throw off an opponent’s BR or cause them to charge like a stupid bull. Just like out-of-game taunting though, you have to make sure that these behaviors do not throw off your own game. It's also important to keep the trash talk from getting too personal. If you start making things personal, you're going to lose respect from the community and end up making more enemies than one would like to have. Practice makes perfect!
