Perfect Shielding

![]() Power shielding was a technique in Melee where an attack was shielded just as it connected. The window for doing this move was small and few people could powershield consistently and, if they could, it was only against projectiles. Regular attacks, when power shielded, allowed the defender to immediately respond with no loss in shield. If a projectile was power shielded, it would be reflected back with half the power. Power shielding was removed in Brawl and was replaced with perfect shielding, which shares some traits with its older cousin. Perfect shielding requires your character to shield just as an attack or projectile will connect, but the window for this maneuver is much higher than it was in Melee, making it easier. The result of perfect shielding is that you can immediately drop your shield and counter-attack, like you could in Melee, but no longer will projectiles be reflected. To be successful with perfect shielding or defending in general, make mental notes of the start-up animations of each attack, so you know their timing and when they will strike. Also learn an opponent's tells, or how they act prior to initiating an attack, this way you can prepare yourself mentally for whatever sequence of events is about to unfold. |
