Gears Late Round Wrap-Up

| The final day of Meadowlands competition kicked-off with an early 10 a.m. start for the remaining Gears of War teams. With several top-notch squads still in the hunt it was anyone's guess as to who would come out on top. (#2) Frag Dominant vs. (#4) Rupture Both Frag Dominant and Rupture have performed admirably at this year's Meadowlands event so it comes as no surprise that the main-stage battle drew quite a crowd of on-lookers. As both teams are essentially comprised of some of the 2007 Pro Circuit's finest, every player was an MLG veteran and knew what to expect coming in to the match. Kicking off with Execution on Canals, Rupture, in their typical over-animated fashion proved they had the skills to pay the bills quickly jumping out to a 3 to 1 round lead. While Rupture made a concerted effort to make use of the sniper rifles, their efforts were generally fruitless, allowing Frag Dominant to gain much needed ground and close the gap to 3 rounds to 2. In a thrilling sixth round, with their backs against the wall Frag Dominant’s only remaining player managed to pull off a miracle upset owning the three remaining Rupture players to even the round count at three apiece. With the next and final round deciding who is catching a plane home and who is heading for their shot at a hard-earned prize check, both teams proceeded with painstaking caution, making for a final round that moved at a snail's pace. Although the first attempt at the final round ended with a draw, the second attempt saw a flurry of action. However in the end Frag Dominant proved to be the better squad in 2008 so far, advancing to face Violent By Instincts. The Last Resistance vs. Th3 Insanez If you have been following our Gears coverage all weekend, you have probably noticed that The Last Resistance, better known around the community as TLR, has been handing out the pain left and right. This time around they faced some formidable competition in the form of Th3 Insanez. While both teams have proven their skills time and time again, would TLR front man Cl0ud's trash talking be enough to take them to the next level? Maybe not. Kicking-off the action, Gridlock offered some two-sided ownage, with both teams showing the crowd how it's done. However, after a strong open, TLR quickly faded, coughing up the map to Th3 Insanez 4 rounds to 2. Despite dropping the ball on Gridlock, TLR came back with a vengeance opening a 55-gallon drum of whoop-ass and clean sweeping Mansion by a score of 4 rounds to none. However in the end, Th3 Insanez came ready to go the extra mile, defeating fan favorites TLR by a final score of 3 maps to 2. Infinity vs. IFC Fifty Frags In one of the most exciting matches to grace the Gears main stage, Infinity took on IFC Fifty Frags for the chance to move to the final round. Coming out swinging, Infinity made quick work of Fifty Frags and claimed the first map in virtually record time. Moving on to War Machine, the crowd was hyped and wondering if Infinity could keep up the pace. However, Fifty Frags aimed to rain on Infinity's parade and with the help of some fancy shooting swung the round count to 1 - 0 in their favor. Now with a one-round cushion, Fifty Frags seemed to momentarily employ a more defensive strategy and while it wasn't terribly exciting to watch, ended up earning them a two-rounds-to-none lead over Infinity. However, not to be outdone, Infinity quickly put up two round victories to tie the round count at two apiece. With the type of choreography usually reserved for 'N sync concerts, Infinity proved their Gears prowess posting another two consecutive round victories (that's four in a row if you're counting) to claim War Machine. Now riding high on a two maps to none lead, Infinity was poised to close out the match at Fuel Depot. In a relatively uneventful (by comparison to the rest of the match) map, Infinity made quick work of Fifty Frags taking the map down by a count of 4 rounds to 1 and sweeping the match 3 maps to none. LOSERS BRACKET FINALS: IFC Fifty Frags vs. The Insanez The road to the finals isn't easy; there are a couple thousand gamers within fifty-yards of me that will attest to that fact. So for both of these teams everything is on the line, and to top it off it's not the first time they have met in this year's Meadowlands competition. As you know, if teams have previously competed against each other we take the previous match score into account. As a result, Fifty Frags already had an extensive 3 to 1 lead over The Insanez going in to the Losers Bracket finals match. In what proved to be a relatively short-lived match, Fifty Frags proved their dominance over The Insanez in their initial meeting was anything but a fluke. Fifty Frags came out strong and never looked back, clean sweeping The Insanez 3 maps to none for a combined total of 6 to 1. Congratulations to IFC Fifty Frags as they prepare to take on favorites Infinity for all the marbles. More 2008 Meadowlands News Halo 3 05.07.08 -
