Beginners Overview: Controls

Get Better Fast » Smash Brawl Lesson Finder » Basics » Controls

Brawl offers four standard controllers from which to choose, three of which are wireless. This is an important note because some tournaments may ban wireless controllers.

Even if you attend a tournament where wireless controllers are permitted, be weary because interference could still be a problem. Also, keep an extra set of batteries on hand and make sure to put fresh batteries in the controller before the tournament starts. It may be a good idea to practice syncing the controller before the tournament, because it is likely that this process will need to be repeated upwards of a dozens times across multiple stations in a single day.

Every controller option in Brawl is customizable via button mapping, something new for Brawl and very beneficial for those who take advantage of it. Keep in mind that if something is uncomfortable or just doesn’t feel quite right that swapping button functions with another button may solve the problem. With this in mind, players have always made decisions with comfort and efficiency in mind and no control scheme or button is ever banned in tournaments.

Note: All the articles in this section assume default configurations unless otherwise noted.
