Jumping is performed by pressing up on the control stick or by pressing X or Y. Most players forgo using the control stick and instead choose either x or y, depending on their preference, because of short hopping, which is simply a shorter jump. To short hop press the X or Y button quickly, but be aware it may take some practice to get used to the short timing. Short hopping can be performed with the control stick by slowly tilting the control stick upwards, but the added tediousness of this makes most players shy from this option. The X and Y buttons are not pressure sensitive, so short hopping is based on the duration the button is pressed. If you have difficulty pressing one of these buttons quickly, try sliding your thumb across the edge of the button instead of just regularly pressing it.
Every character has at a minimum two jumps before they have to land and reset themselves. If your character is hit, they will usually have at least one more jump before they need to land. Be mindful of saving this jump when you are recovering. Attempt to get as much extra horizontal distance simply by holding the joystick toward the stage as your character is falling. Many characters also have extra moves that allow them to get closer to the stage without using jumps, so expend these options while saving the jump as a last resort.
Some characters, though, such as King DeDeDe and Kirby, have multiple, shorter jumps when they are in the air. These characters can use this property well for edge guarding and following opponents off the stage to defend against recovery. It may help to practice jumping and quickly attacking repeatedly with an aerial to learn the best timing while you’re off the stage.
