[edit] Gameplay Tips

[edit] Legal Glitches

These are glitches, within the game's unmodified engine, that are deemed acceptable gameplay by the competitive community. See what is an illegal glitch.

  • Backpack Reloading
    Default - Press X, X, Y
So named because a player can reload a weapon in the "backpack" while using another weapon, eliminating the need to wait for any reload animations.
  • Quick Camo

Camouflage usually takes 2 seconds to fully cloak the player, however there are 2 glitches that will bypass this waiting time:
    1. Pick up active camouflage, fire any non-scope weapon except the needler or,
    2. Fire a scope weapon, then switch to any non-scope weapon except the needler.
It is wise to carry a secondary weapon to switch to that can do this.

  • Double Melee
    Default - Press B, L, B
A player melees once, quickly triggers a grenade throw, and can melee a second time faster that can also kill an opponent with a full health meter. The "claw" is a technique used by some players for greater accuracy.
  • Power-up Frenzy
Each player "times" to pick up the power-up as it spawns to receive the effects of that power-up.

[edit] "Timing"

Unlike in the sequels to Halo, all items respawn at even intervals throughout the game—regardless of when a player picks them up. This is the preferred system as it gives each player a chance to pick up power weapons.

"Timing" refers to using some sort of countdown clock to help in the assistance of acquiring an essential item upon its arrival. During competitive play, items mean the Rocket Launcher, Active Camo, Overshield, and Sniper Rifle.

Players will often Velcro watch heads (with a stopwatch function) to the front of their controllers to assist them in "timing." Kitchen timers (that count down from 1 minute to 0, then repeat), as well as talking computer programs and MP3 files (shown below), are also used.

[edit] Spawn Control

This refers to exploiting the game's respawn system to gain a temporary advantage over the opposing team. Players will respawn at designated points on a map in relation to their teammate. Understanding how the respawn system works will yield an advantage in these ways:

  • Spawn Prediction
Gaining an easy kill by being able to predict exact moment and place that an opponent is likely to respawn.
  • Spawn Trapping
One team traps the opposing team into a specific part of the map by moving back to their original areas after killing them.
  • Force Spawn
Finding yourself in a specific area will force your teammate to respawn at a specific point. Doing this will place the spawning teammate in a position to draw attention, or flank the opposing team.
  • Random Spawn
There are key points on mosts maps that, when positioned correctly, will force a teammate to respawn at a random spawn point, as opposed to one in close proximity. Randoms are used to get out of a trapping situation.

[edit] Nade Points

These are precise points on a map where a properly thrown grenade will propel power weapons and power-ups to the grenadier, as shown in the videos below. Utilizing this tactic will sometimes give an advantage to a team which is pinned in a disadvantageous spot on a map.

[edit] Crouching

Crouching can lend many advantages:

  • Strafe Crouching
Crouching, usually while strafing, to evade a headshot.
  • Crouch Jump
Reach new heights by pressing and holding the crouch button at the peek of a jump.
  • Crouch Land
Crouching when about to hit the ground will significantly reduce, if any, fall damage, but a badly timed crouch landing could deliver more damage or fall to your death.

[edit] Illegal Gameplay

It is unacceptable in a competitive gametype to perform these practices.

[edit] Illegal Glitches

  • Infinite Ammo
    Default - Press X, Hold X
A glitch in the game allows a player to fire off a weapon, then while reloading, hold X to swap with a weapon on the ground; this reloads the weapon on the ground without subtracting from the clip count. Essentially giving the player infinite ammo for a weapon as long as the player doesn't mind constantly repeating the glitch. This is illegal to do in any MLG sanctioned tournament.

[edit] Illegal Profile Names

  • Blank Names
Blank names are made by using the space bar. There is no name to pick up when the reticle is on the opponent so it helps conceal a camouflaged person. This is illegal to have in any MLG sanctioned tournament.
  • Identical Names
Since spaces can be added after what may seem the end of a name, or letters and numbers can look similar, multiple people can have what looks like the same name. This is illegal to do in any MLG sanctioned tournament.
  • .fortune
These instructions, "Enter a name for your player profile," will be turned into a fortune cookie like message and revert the name change to a New profile number. Not illegal, but an easter egg.

[edit] XBConnect

A tunneling program that tricks the Xbox into LANing over the network. See XBC's help center for setting up your connection. This is the closest the video game will get to have online capability besides Microsoft deciding to re-release Halo: CE on Xbox Live Arcade with the additional feature of online play. There is no evidence to suggest that it is even being discussed at Microsoft, however.
