[edit] MLG Pro Circuit 2005 Season

[edit] Washington D.C.: January 29 - 30 - 2005

With the launch of Halo 2 back in November, MLG was ready for a new flagship game and a new season of amazing action. The venue was huge and the turnout was better than anything we had seen during the ’04 season. Smash broke its previous attendance record with over 100 players vying for first place, while Halo had a full 50 teams attending. With a new game and a new batch of tricks, StK returned for Halo 2 with OGRE 1, OGRE 2, Walshy and new addition Saiyan to dominate the opposition and take home first place.

[edit] San Francisco: February 26 - 27 - 2005

MLG gave Halo 2 a break from the spotlight in San Fransisco and brought out some 2D and 3D fighters to compete at the event. While the staff felt like the workload doubled, the competition remained fierce and the players who attended had an amazing time. For MLG’s permanent games, StK defeated rivals Check Six once again, taking Halo 2’s top honors, and Ken narrowly defeated DieSuperFly for first place in Smash.

[edit] Houston: March 13 - 14 - 2005

StK continued their reign of dominance at one of the nicest venues of the year in Houston, TX. With over 60 Halo 2 teams and a massive registration for Smash, the third event of the 2005 season was a resounding success. StK once again defeated Check Six in the finals, despite losing them on the Winners side and having to come back from the Losers. With Ken and Isai missing from the event, Texas’ top Smasher Rob$ defeated KillaOR in the Smash finals with a huge hometown crowd behind him.

[edit] Orlando: April 23 - 24 - 2005

StK picked up sponsorship through the well-known PC gaming clan Team 3D, which changed their name but not their performance. The fear-inducing squad dominated once again in beautiful Orlando, with a victory over iGameSpot in the finals of Halo 2. For SSBM, Midwestern Smash icon Eddie won the event, defeating all the locals and East Coast players who traveled to attend. This event proved to be a huge turning point for the rest of 2005 season, as Check Six dissolved, teams shifted talent around and top players refocused going into the second half of the season.

[edit] St. Louis: June 25 - 26 - 2005

Breaking previous attendance records with 64 full Halo 2 teams, St. Louis was another big success for MLG and professional gaming. They defeated all challengers once again for first place, making many wonder if anyone could ever defeat this astounding team. Darkrain proved himself to be among the best in the nation in SSBM as he eliminated opponent-after-opponent and bested Joshu in the Finals to earn his best finish of the year at first place.

[edit] Philadelphia: July 28 - 31 - 2005

This event was one for the record books. With an outstanding 98 Halo teams in attendance and another huge turnout for Smash, Philadelphia 2005 was the largest console gaming tournament ever up until that point. MLG ran the event for four days, including a series of classic Halo: CE tournaments, along with Halo 2 and SSBM. Halo saw its biggest upset of the season. After completely dominating every aspect of the Halo: CE events, the members of Team 3D struggled during the Halo 2 all-Team Slayer event. The newly-formed Str8 Rippin lineup, Zyos, Tsquared, Fonzi and Foulacy, defeated Team 3D with well-executed strategies and inhuman amounts of patience and determination. The stunned, massive crowd could only wonder what might happen now that the only team to ever been Halo 2’s champions had been defeated. In Smash action, Chillin, often in the shadow of his teammate Azen at Smash events, won his first tournament ever for SSBM.

[edit] Las Vegas: August 12 - 14 - 2005

Held in a gigantic ballroom in the gorgeous Green Valley Ranch Resort, MLG attendees were treated to one of the best events in the company’s history. Hosting a series of 2D and 3D fighting game events once again, MLG combined these fighting game players with the usual Halo 2 and SSBM suspects to pack the huge ballroom for three straight days. Str8 Rippin had picked up a sponsorship, making them Team TmG, and repeated their success in Philadelphia relatively easily with the absence of Team 3D. Caveman, a top Texan Smasher, won the singles competition for SSBM by defeating his Teams partner and Houston champion Rob$ in the Finals.

[edit] Nashville: August 27 - 28 - 2005

Central Conference Major

With many of the top players on the tour taking a break from the competitive scene, a lot of the hard-working and underappreciated talent on the MLG circuit got a chance to shine in Nashville. Many talented but rarely mentioned players got their chance to play on VoD and make a name for themselves over the course of the event. A combined team of Zyos, Vash, Gandhi and Defy, calling themselves IGS Monglers, took first place in the Halo 2 event, while Chu Dat defeated Darkrain in the Finals for SSBM.

[edit] Seattle: September 10 - 11 - 2005

Western Conference Major

While Halo 2 had a slightly smaller than usual turnout in Seattle, the Smash Pros were out in force as the likes of Azen, Chu Dat and Isai headed up to the Northwest to compete for first place at the last stop of the regular season. Azen proved once again to be a cut above the rest as he defeated Isai, Chu Dat and others and took first place. Meanwhile IGS took first place in Halo 2 sporting the new lineup of Gandhi, Karma, Shockwav3 and Defy.

[edit] Los Angeles: October 14th - 16th - 2005

Western Conference Championship

The Western Conference Championship in LA was one of the most intense and exciting events of the year, as Team 3D made their return to the tour for the first time since their loss in Philadelphia several months before. With a rematch staged against rivals TmG, MLG fans stayed glued to VoD all weekend long. 3D did not disappoint as they rolled through the competition and defeated TmG in the Finals. In the Smash event, Isai narrowly defeated KillaOR in the Losers Bracket and then went on to defeat Ken in the Finals, taking first place from his regular Teams partner.

[edit] Atlanta: November 25th - 27th - 2005

Eastern Conference Championship

Returning to the Dirty South for the hallowed 50k Halo tourney series, MLG fans were prepared for another incredible event. Once again 3D was able to defeat TmG in the Finals and secure their spot as the champions of Halo 2. On the Smash side, Azen and Ken met up for an epic showdown. Despite finally earning his first tournament victory over Ken in the Winnners Finals, Azen dropped the championship match against him and was forced to settle for second place. With only one stop left in the Conference Championship series, all the top players from both games put the past behind them and refocused on their last chance for 2005 glory.

[edit] New York City: February 25 - 26 - 2006

2005 National Championship

With the rest of the season finished, all that was left was for the top players to meet at the National Championships in New York. Team 3D proved once again to be champions, but faced some serious competition for the first time since they had returned to the tour. They faced Team Phreaks (formerly IGS) in the Finals with their deadly combination of Karma, StrongSide, Shockwave and Gandhi, who gave them an intense final series that had many wondering if 3D might finally lose again. Karma was untouchable in the FFA and 1v1 portion of the Halo 2 event, taking home first place with relative ease. Meanwhile Ken and Isai continued their unbeaten streak in SSBM Teams and Ken repeated as National Champion in Singles. While the season was over, 2006 was just around the corner--and with some new lineups and newly developing talent, MLG fans were already looking forward to another great season.
